To the APU Community:
Elaine Atwood, a long-time APU Trustee and civic leader in the Anchorage community, passed away on January 30, 2003. In addition to being an APU Board Member since1986, Elaine was President of the Atwood Foundation and a generous supporter of APU students. Over 140 students have been recipients of the Atwood Distinguished Scholarship, made possible by The Atwood Foundation's support of our university. Scholarship recipient, Andrea Powers, wrote in a thank you letter to Elaine Atwood, "As a student that bears the full responsibility for funding my education…I would like to thank you for your priceless contribution to the betterment of my life."
Elaine's father, Bob Atwood, an Alaskan of towering importance and owner-editor of the Anchorage Times, was a founder of AMU. Elaine contributed in many ways to the Anchorage Community: she was one of the first women to be elected to the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce and the Anchorage Petroleum Club, a member of Downtown Rotary, and an accomplished newspaperwoman in her own right. She was a witty, thoughtful woman, full of life and wisdom. Thank you, Elaine, for all your support and all you have done for APU.
