Donors to Alaska Pacific University make a huge difference in the ability of students to complete their educations by providing support in the form of annual fund gifts, capital gifts, and more directly, through the support of scholarship funds. Alaska Pacific University provides about $1 million each year in scholarships, grants and university financial aid to students needing financial assistance. An additional $300,000 is distributed annually in the form of benefactor scholarships - scholarships made possible thought generous charitable gifts from individuals and corporations. Just a few of the many benefactor scholarships available at APU include:
The Atwood Scholarship was established by Robert and Evangeline Atwood in 1980. Countless Alaska Pacific University students have benefited from this scholarship including the 90 students who received the scholarship this year. Atwood Scholarship awardees receive anywhere from a few hundred dollars to several thousands of dollars and are students enrolled in any one of our degree programs.
Anchorage Amateur Radio Club's scholarships are given to students allowing college level promise in science, mathematics, communications, radio, electronics or astronomy. Since it was established in 1987 the scholarship has provided over $60,000 in scholarship awards to twenty APU students. Jeremiah Boone, a two time Anchorage Amateur Radio Club Scholarship recipient wrote to the club, "I am writing this letter of thank you for the scholarship that your wonderful organization has given me for the second year. Without the scholarship, my dream of going to this great university in this wonderful state would not be possible." "I am really grateful people have the time and commitment to help students out. Receiving this scholarship has helped me follow through on my education." The Anchorage Daily News Scholarship was established in 1994 to provide deserving students with the financial assistance they need to achieve their academic goals. Judith Farrow, one of the 2004-2005 ADN scholarship recipients wrote in a thank you letter "the award is a bonus for me…, and I thank you again for the choice that you made in granting me the gift of the scholarship."
Alaska Pacific University's President's Forum has been awarding scholarships since it was founded in 1991. The President's Forum is a membership group that promotes awareness of APU and its programs. Membership dues are directed to student scholarships and faculty awards. The group awards two $3,000 President's Forum Scholarships and one $4,000 Trotter Scholarship (named for APU Past President Tom Trotter) each year, as well as one $1,000 faculty award. In addition President's Forum members have been working to build an endowed scholarship of $100,000 to provide even more scholarships for worthy APU students. The 2004-2005 President's Forum scholars are Amy Schenck, Nilar Thein and Samantha Wagner. Amy Schenck wants the members of President's Forum to know, "I am really grateful people have the time and commitment to help students out. Receiving this scholarship has helped me follow through on my education. We see so many incidences of cruelty in this world I am really moved to have so many people go out of their way to help me." The First National Bank Alaska Early Honors Scholarship was established in 2004 to provide significant scholarships to students who because of financial restrictions would not be able to participate in APU's Early Honors Program for outstanding high school seniors. This year 5 students from Anchorage, the Kenai Peninsula and the Matanuska Valley received scholarships thanks to the generosity of First National Bank Alaska.
